Ocean Avenue Pipe Work

The District has found significant pipe damage to the Ocean Avenue main sewer line which requires complete replacement of the line. Due to the location of the pipe, the large impact area, and the need to complete the project as quickly as possible, the District has elected to use a much less disruptive method of pipe replacement than digging up the entire line. A "trenchless" technology called pipe bursting will be used where a new pipe is pulled through the existing pipe while the old pipe is expanded to accommodate the new pipe. The line to be replaced extends from the manhole above Marietta Avenue across from Ocean Ave. Extension down to Hawk Street. Three holes will be excavated to accommodate the pipe and equipment to pull the pipe through the old line. Smaller holes will have to be dug at any service lines that have to be reconnected. The project is expected to start the week of September 21, 2009 and is anticipated to take approximately five days to complete.

The Ted Berry company will be doing the pipe bursting process. The following link and diagram show detailed pictures and diagrams of how this is done.
